Stoop season: what to grab before a Saturday at the Italian Market

A walk down 9th Street is better with the right bag, good shoes and a little cash. Our list for a long market morning.

Few things beat a Saturday morning on 9th Street: awnings out, produce stacked high, cannoli for the walk home. A little planning makes the trip easier.

Wear shoes you can walk in

Between the market, a coffee stop and the walk back, it is easy to cover three miles. Flexible, light shoes with room for your toes beat stiff sneakers on uneven sidewalks.

Bring two bags, not one

A sturdy tote for produce and a small cross-body bag for your phone and cash. Many stalls still prefer cash, so stop at an ATM first.

Pack for the sun

  • Sunglasses with real UV protection.
  • A refillable water bottle.
  • A hat if you plan to linger on the stoop afterward.
Driving in? Keep a small emergency kit in the trunk and check your tire pressure. A cordless inflator lives happily under the passenger seat.

Back home

Unpack, wipe down a cutting board, and set out what you bought for Sunday dinner. Then claim your spot on the stoop. You earned it.
